Description:
In May, 2011, I was asked by the Italian trumpet soloist Ivano Ascari, to write a piece for him. Based on my piano piece '5+5' (1981) I wrote the piece so that it can be played with the same three fingerings on C or B flat-trumpet. In order to maintain the internal system (limitation to five black and five white keys on the piano and to five harmonics on only three fingerings for the trumpet: 0, 2 and 1), it was necessary to write two different piano parts to correlate with the pitch of the chosen trumpet.
The title 'Small Change' is a colloquial term with a monetary connotation. In this instance, however, the term is used to connote a lightly presented piece.
