Buzzing (lip humming) with the mouthpiece can be very helpful if it is done systematically and in a controlled manner. As the mouthpiece offers less resistance than the instrument, you get used to giving more air. The greater airflow relaxes the lips and allows them to vibrate more freely, which produces a richer sound. You have to rely on your ear for intonation, just like singers do. Buzzing also contributes to the development of an efficient and secure embouchure. And perhaps most importantly, mouthpiece buzzing makes it easier to create new, refined body and listening habits.
