Emma's Dance was composed in the summer of 1994 for tuba player Scott Mendoker to celebrate the birth of Emma Rose, the daughter of Scott and Annie Mendoker. Rather than focusing on the joy and relief of the birth itself, this work explores the emotional landscape that precedes it—the struggle, fear, and doubts that accompany anticipation and uncertainty. The composition captures the emotional turbulence of this time and flows seamlessly between moments of complete exuberance and passages of deep concern. These contrasting emotional states create a dynamic musical narrative that reflects the complexity of the human experience during significant life transitions.
