The Sonata a Quattro by Arcangelo Corelli is one of the most important works of the Italian Baroque period and impressively reflects its stylistic ideals. Clarity, balance and expressiveness characterize this composition, in which Corelli's art of counterpoint and musical dialogue is clearly expressed. The arrangement by Jean-François Michel preserves the spirit of the original while at the same time lending it new freshness and transparency. The six movements form a varied musical dramaturgy. The introductory Adagio unfolds a solemn and calm mood, followed by the songful Andante Largo. The music gains momentum with the Allegro Vivace, before the serious Grave creates a reflective moment. The last two movements, Presto and Vivace, bring the work to a lively and elegant close.
