The tuba, with its clumsy appearance, curiously expressive tone quality and capacity for technical agility largely unexplored, has long been associated with tragi-comedy often adding a touch of the grotesque.
Undertones is in two formats: tuba and string quartet (1997), winner of the 2000 Clements Memorial Prize (for a chamber music composition), and tuba and piano (2024). In the latter version, the accompaniment has been condensed and adapted to be more characteristic of the piano, but the tuba part remains largely unaltered.
