Although fully notated, Zichner’s *Blues* fully preserves the spirit of the blues and jazz tradition. The score provides the musical framework, while short fills—those little phrases that connect one idea to the next—allow the performers the freedom to bring their own personalities to the music. Intended as responses to the musical dialogue rather than as solos, they should remain natural, spontaneous, and stylistically coherent, supporting the ensemble without ever stealing the show. The work celebrates the rhythmic vitality, flexibility, and dialogic character of the blues. A simple idea played with conviction counts for more here than a complex passage: thus, each performance reflects the musicians’ personalities while remaining true to the quartet’s groove, style, and sound.
