The sonata is one of the rare compositions of the 18th century, a time in which the alto recorder was increasingly displaced by the flûte traversière.

This popular sonata must have been appreciated even by the author, who later rewrote the work for flute and obbligato harpsichord, adding 'o violin' in the 2nd part.

The sonata is one of the few trios deviating from the standard instrumentation for 2 flutes and bc. that has since become standard literature for baroque players.

Quantz's present trio sonata, thanks to its variable scoring possibilities, became one of his most popular, conceived entirely in the spirit of 'constantly mixed tastes'.
