Description:
Carl Gottlieb Reißiger (1798-1859) left a lasting mark on Dresden's musical history in the 19th century. The successor to Carl Maria von Weber and colleague of Richard Wagner as Kapellmeister at the court theater was responsible for the permanent establishment of German operas in the repertoire, including his own stage works. He was also successful as a composer of oratorios, church and chamber music, not least as a teacher: a first general music director who was involved in all areas of musical life.
Carl Gottlieb Reißiger's letters, which have been published here in full for the first time, give him an artistic and personal profile: competent, constructive and hard-working, an energetic manager who was able to cope with the many demands of his position at all times, confident in his abilities and always ready to help and support. A man whose word carried weight, emotionally stable and of strong constitution, a witty letter writer, a good family man and loyal friend.
