Bärenreiter's pioneering scholarly-critical editions of the works for one instrument and piano by Johannes Brahms (BA 9429, BA 9430, BA 9431, BA 9432, BA 9433, BA 10911, BA 10908, BA 10907, BA 10906) have been edited by a team of musicologists who are also instrumentalists themselves. They offer musicians not only a reliable musical text that takes into account all surviving sources, but also a comprehensive examination of the works: this captures the compositions in their historical context and illuminates what Brahms was trying to convey through his notation.

An integral part of these Brahms editions is the present text booklet, which deals with general aspects of 19th-century performance practice, e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. In addition, the musician is offered enlightening information on vibrato, portamento and bowing. And finally, the peculiarities of Brahms' own piano playing and that of his friends and contemporaries are highlighted.
