Monteverdi's Ulisse, written in 1640 for the Teatro San Cassiano in Venice, was based on Homer's Odyssey by its librettist Giacomo Badoardo. The opera was an instant success. Monteverdi's musical language achieved a dramatic variety here that corresponds to the many intertwined plot threads.
No score has been published for sale since the complete edition by Gian Francesco Malipiero (1930), although numerous adaptations and arrangements have been made. The edition situation may be partly responsible for the fact that, in contrast to Orfeo and Poppea, Ulisse is not present in the repertoire to a comparable extent. This may now change: With Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Bärenreiter-Verlag is launching a series of new editions edited by the conductor and harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini.
The principles of these new editions are clearly outlined: the greatest possible proximity to the source and identification of all editorial decisions. The scores contain a detailed preface, which deals primarily with questions of performance practice. They also contain critical editions of the libretti and critical reports in which the sources are described and all decisions are clearly explained.
