Haydn probably wrote the Missa Sancti Nicolai in 1772 for Prince Nicolaus Esterházy's name day. Not only is it comparatively large in scale, but the orchestra is also larger than usual for Missae breves, with two oboes and two horns as well as strings. The beginning of the Kyrie immediately strikes the soft, pastoral tone that generally characterizes the work. To round things off, Haydn lets the music of the Kyrie return in the Dona nobis pacem.

The score also contains the organ part.
