Haydn's first mass, despite its popular melody, has a devotional character which, like its youthful verve, still inspired the old Haydn, who re-orchestrated his first work in 1805. The first version is thought to have been composed in 1749 or 1750. Around the same time, Pope Benedict XIV addressed questions of church music in his encyclical "Annus qui". In it, he condemned its often operatic style and called for liturgical music that was aware of its religious task and sought to fulfill it with simple means of musical expression. Haydn's first mass is based on this view in its liturgical attitude, which largely corresponded to the general ecclesiastical view of the 18th century.
