Johann Michael Haydn left behind more than thirty Latin and German-language works for two or three upper voices, composed for his "dear choirboys" from the Salzburg Kapellhaus. The first ordinarium setting in this series was the Missa Sancti Aloysii, composed in 1777, originally intended for the Day of the Innocent Children on December 28, when the chapel boys celebrated their main festival. This extremely charming mass, characterized by a wonderfully lively joyfulness, is an insider tip for anyone looking for new repertoire for three-part women's, girls' or boys' choirs. Due to its small instrumentation, the mass is also ideal for performances on a smaller scale.
