Description:
Marian hymns have been handed down in various languages since the 12th century. One of the best-known collections of Marian hymns is the prayer and hymnal "Goldener Himmelsschlüssel" by Martin von Cochem (1689), which contains one of the most famous Marian hymns ("Maria breit den Mantel aus"). Hiller's strophic songs, however, are not to be placed in the liturgical chants, but rather as a contribution to the Marian piety that emerged in the 19th century and as an enrichment of the general chant literature.
