Description:
No original sources have survived for Bach's great Reformation cantata "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott". It is possible that the original version of the cantata was composed in Weimar in 1715, which Bach later reworked into the Reformation cantata for Leipzig.
Scholarly opinions on the sources differ. However, there is agreement that the opening chorus based on Martin Luther's chorale melody "Ein feste Burg" is one of Bach's greatest creations.
