Description:
Bach's oratorio for Ascension Day was composed in Leipzig in 1735. In terms of scope, it corresponds to a cantata, but in terms of the choice of text, it can be classified as an oratorio.
In addition to the biblical account of Ascension Day, there are chorales and free madrigal poems. As in other works of this year (including the "Christmas Oratorio"), Bach's preference for colorful instrumentation can be observed: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 trumpets, timpani and strings create a baroque splendor of sound with a decidedly festive character. The edition is based on the revised, reliable musical text of the "New Bach Edition".
