Description:
Für die Komposition des Weihnachts-Oratoriums bediente sich Johann Sebastian Bach wie auch bei anderen großen Vokalwerken des Parodieverfahrens, d. h., er griff auf früher komponierte Sätze zurück (in diesem Fall meist aus den Glückwunschkantaten BWV 213 und 214) und passte sie kunstvoll dem neuen Text an. Mit der musikalischen Gestaltung dürfte Bach in der Adventszeit 1734 begonnen haben. Über die erste Aufführung an den Festtagen Ende 1734 und Anfang 1735 hinaus gelten weitere Aufführungen zu Bachs Lebzeiten als sehr wahrscheinlich, da das originale, mitunter autographe Stimmenmaterial Spuren regen Gebrauchs zeigt.
