Description:
For the composition of the Christmas Oratorio, Johann Sebastian Bach made use of the parody procedure, as he did with other large vocal works, i.e., he fell back on previously composed movements (in this case mostly from the Congratulatory Cantatas BWV 213 and 214) and artfully adapted them to the new text. Bach probably began with the musical arrangement in the Advent season of 1734. Beyond the first performance on the feast days at the end of 1734 and beginning of 1735, further performances during Bach's lifetime are considered very probable, since the original, sometimes autograph part material shows traces of active use.
