Description:
Since the days of the Renaissance composers, there has been - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the veneration of a great composer colleague in the form of quotations or even new versions of his works. No less a work of the classical era than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (Vienna 1798) forms the basis of this Mass of Creation by his contemporary Luigi Gatti. Gatti, court and cathedral conductor in Salzburg, became acquainted with the oratorio at performances in Salzburg, which were conducted by his musician colleague Johann Michael Haydn there in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity, Gatti achieved the feat of setting the choruses and arias of The Creation to the Latin mass text (sometimes with reduced or adapted instrumentation) without distorting the admired original.
