Description:
After the Passion cantata "Ein Lämmlein geht und trägt die Schuld" from 1775, the Christmas Oratorio is the second major vocal work by Homilius to be published in print during his lifetime. With an unusually large instrumental apparatus, Homilius sets the text, which takes up the shepherd theme so popular at the time, in a very differentiated way. Each movement is a distinctly different mood painting from all the others. This includes different shepherd music as well as the angel who appears as a representative of the mighty God with trumpets and timpani.
