During his stay in Rome in 1841 and 1842, Hiller and his family were the center of the German artists' colony in the "eternal city". The versatile composer studied Roman vocal polyphony after Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and also took part in rehearsals with the papal chapel. His teachers during this time were Giuseppe Baini (1775-1844), an Italian music historian and church composer, and Fortunato "Abbate" Santini (1777-1861), a Catholic clergyman, composer and music collector. The latter is also the dedicatee of the present motet, which was completed in Rome on April 27, 1842 and is now available here in print for the first time. (Florian Ilge)
