Description:
Telemann's setting of the 121st Psalm betrays his admiration for French music. Modeled on a grand motet, it takes up French patterns in all movements: the overture model in the first movement, chaconne echoes in the second, the dotted gigue rhythm of the canarie in the third. In addition, there is the lively alternation of choir and soloist ensemble typical of the genre. The music is full of pictorial poetry wherever the opportunity arises, such as at the very beginning with the words "I lift up my eyes" or later with the text "Behold, the host of Israel slumbers not yet".
