Description:
The cantata Jesu, der du meine Seele belongs to the famous series of choral cantatas that Bach composed in his second year in Leipzig. It was probably performed for the first time in one of Leipzig's main churches on September 10, 1724, the 14th Sunday after Trinity Sunday. The poem is based on Johann Rist's song (1641), which was very popular at the time. As in most cantatas of this year, the first and last verses form the cornerstones of the poem and are retained verbatim, while the middle verses have been freely transformed into arias and recitatives.
