With "L'Étoile", Chabrier has composed a light-hearted masterpiece that has been brought back to life more and more frequently in recent times.

The plot is introduced by King Ouf I, who offers his people an execution every year on his birthday. Now the problem arises that there is currently no crime to be discovered that could serve as a reason for the execution. Finally, he finds a supposed victim in the young Lazuli, whose fate, according to the astrologer Siroco, is closely linked to his own life.
The comic opera is spiced up with a tale of mistaken identity involving a great deal of diplomacy, a love story and plenty of sophisticated and catchy melodies.

Chabrier was a master of the delicate and intricate art of musical comedy, a field in which he can be compared to Offenbach, Rossini and Mozart.

This piano reduction is based on the score edited by Hugh Macdonald and published as part of the "L'Opéra français" series.
