Description:
Salieri's setting, which is close to Italian opera seria, seems to have particularly appealed to the famous poet. In a letter to the 26-year-old composer, he wrote that it was the most expressive music of all that had been written to this poem. - A great compliment!
Salieri wrote the work in 1776 for a concert of the "Musicalische Societät der freyen Tonkunst der Witwen und Waisen". This society was a kind of pension and insurance association and at the same time the first public concert society in Vienna, as well as the only musical institution dedicated primarily to oratorio. The concerts took place in the Burgtheater during Advent and Lent.
