Description:
Inspired by patterns from the Commedia dell'Arte, the plot, set in Seville, introduces the old "graybeard" Don Belflor (retired bullfighter and womanizer), his young wife Coraline and her lover Tracolin. In a highly modern way, a love triangle is formed - the "accord parfait" is a perfect triad of exactly three notes - which is approved of by everyone involved. One notices that the libretti of the Second Republic were no longer subject to the constraints of censorship.
Musically, two arias are provided for each part. As a flautist, Tracolin also knows how to incorporate famous melodies from the French operatic repertoire into his courtship. The centerpieces are the two tercets. One of them, the variation number "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman", is the jewel of the opera: here, vocal virtuosity and the comedy of the situation are combined with brilliant ease.
