The opera "Le nozze di Figaro" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte, which premiered on May 1, 1786 at the Vienna Court Theatre, can be regarded as one of the greatest operatic successes of all time. The opera owes its success by no means to Mozart's music alone: due to the extraordinary demands it places on the orchestra, and here primarily on the woodwinds, the music initially tended to stand in the way of it spreading beyond the borders of the German-Austrian cultural area. The librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte played at least as great a part in its success, succeeding in creating an equally effective and amusing opera libretto from a contemporary and socially critical play.
This piano reduction is based on the edition of "Le nozze di Figaro" published by Ludwig Finscher in 1973 as part of the "New Mozart Edition" and the critical report by Ulrich Leisinger published in 2007.
Many sources relating to Mozart's first opera from the Lorenzo Da Ponte trilogy only became accessible again after the publication of the NMA edition, including the autograph of the 3rd and 4th acts.
These now accessible original sources offer definitive solutions to a number of questions that had previously remained unanswered and are reproduced in this piano reduction.
