Description:
Bobbi Fischer's "Magnificat" builds a musical bridge between Europe and South America. His setting of Mary's song of praise from the Gospel of Luke draws on the abundance of Afro-Caribbean rhythms. We experience the solo soprano as the voice of Mary. The first movement lends hymn-like expression to the text with the great energy of Cuban salsa. There are also many word-sound relationships in the rest of the work. For example, the 9-part canon "Deposuit potentes" ("He casts down the mighty and exalts the lowly") gesturally sets the exaltation and abasement through the chromatic octave progression in opposite directions.
This work is a stylistic continuation of Bobbi Fischer's Missa latina (Carus 28.007). The rhythm section (piano, bass, drums and percussion) is identical; with two obbligato violins and a wind instrument (alto saxophone/flute), new instrumental colors of the "Latin world" are added in place of the bandoneon and violin of the Missa latina.
The Magnificat was commissioned in 2017 by the Landesakademie für die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Württemberg for the choir of the C.H.O.I.R. International Choir Festival.
The work is also available as a recording on CD (Carus 83.483).
