Bei der Komposition der Kantate BWV 149 griff Bach auf Teile eines älteren Werkes zurück: Der Eingangschor ist eine Parodie der Jagdkantate BWV 208. Neben kleineren, textbedingten Änderungen verwendete Trompeten anstelle von Hörnern. Hierzu transponierte er den Satz von F- nach C-Dur. Die drei Arien sind musikalisch und in der Instrumentierung sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltet. Kennzeichen der Bass-Arie (2. Satz) ist eine bewegte Continuo-Begleitung. Nach dem anschliessenden Secco-Rezitativ entfaltet sich eine ausgedehnte und tänzerische Sopran-Arie mit Streicherbegleitung. Die dritte Arie Satz 6) besticht neben bewegter Melodik und Kanonbildung in den Singstimmen besonders durch den Einsatz des Fagotts als instrumentaler Gegenpart zum Duett zwischen Alt und Tenor.
