1815 was a year in which Schubert tirelessly created new works despite all his overwhelming teaching duties. In addition to around 140 new songs, he wrote the second and third symphonies, four stage works, the first significant compositions for piano, the string quartet in g (D 173) and two masses: the one in G (D 167) and the one in B flat presented here. If one considers that the Mass in F (D 105) was written in May-July 1814 and the Mass in C (D 452) in June-July 1816, then it becomes clear that of the six complete settings of the Mass text that have come down to us from Schubert, four were composed in the short period of two years.

The first performance of the Mass certainly took place soon after its completion, probably in Lichtental. A further performance can be deduced from the fact that some partially autograph parts - the organ part, 3 soprano and 3 alto parts - were produced around 1820. Schubert's brother Ferdinand, who played the organ, reports a third performance at the beginning of October 1824 in the parish church in Hainburg. The mass was published for the first time in print in 1837 as op. 141 by the Viennese publisher Tobias Haslinger.
