Description:

Mozart's Missa in C minor K. 139 (114a) from 1768/69, the so-called Orphanage Mass, is very likely the composer's first contribution to the genre of the Missa solemnis (with brass), as it was cultivated for church feasts and other particularly representative spiritual occasions. As the proximity of Kyrie and Agnus to Gluck's opera "Orfeo" (Furiaszene, opening chorus), which premiered in Vienna in 1762, shows, the young Mozart makes direct use of stage-dramatic means of expression in these parts of the Mass. The Mass captivates precisely because of its boldness and lively contrasts, which Mozart tends to avoid in his later masses.
