Description:
The "Messe de Requiem" is probably Gabriel Fauré's best-known and most frequently performed work internationally. After the composer limited himself to just five movements and a small orchestration with low strings, harp and organ in the first version, the work was constantly expanded until the version for large orchestra from 1900, on which this edition is based. Despite the comparatively long period of composition, the Requiem forms a stylistic unity. In contrast to other Requiem settings, it does without any theatrical moments. Restrained dynamics and graceful melodic writing by both the soloists and the choir give the work a gentle and conciliatory character.
Like the piano reduction, the choral score is based on the Urtext of the Fauré Complete Edition (BA 9461), which has been published by Bärenreiter-Verlag since 2010. It is also compatible with the second version of the Requiem from 1893.
