Hasse's Misere in c exists in several authentic versions. The first version from 1735 was intended for the girls of the Ospedale degl'Incurabili in Venice; Carus offers a later version for mixed voices. The work, which originally belonged to a Venetian church celebration on Holy Days, comprises eight parts of contrasting character. The ritornelle, in which short phrases and sequenced sections are spun out into fine lines, and the bel canto-influenced solo parts are immediately captivating. Rather than seeking to cause horror and shock, Hasse's music refers to the consolation promised to those pleading for mercy, and its beauty is intended to grip the listener and lead them to devotion.
