Description:
Mozart and Haydn greatly appreciated the church music of their friend and Viennese court conductor Joseph Eybler. The Missa Sancti Alberti with its lyrical, pastoral tone stands in contrast to his mass settings for large ensembles; in its structure, scope and instrumentation, it is reminiscent of Franz Schubert's well-known Mass in G major. With the exception of two solo quartets (which can also be scored from the choir), the choir is the main vehicle for the musical action; the concentrated setting of the mass text is predominantly homophonic. Based on the string sound, the orchestra can be enriched ad libitum with two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets and timpani, allowing the work to present itself in its masterful orchestration.
