Mozart's "Missa in C" K. 337 is similar to the "Coronation Mass" K. 317 in its scoring, occasion and scope: around a year after the "Coronation Mass", in March 1780, the "Missa in C" was also intended for the Easter High Mass in Salzburg Cathedral together with a church sonata (K. 336/336d). The occasion called for a festive instrumentation with oboes, solo bassoon, trumpets and timpani. The scope of the work corresponds to the previous year's mass cycle, and it is tailored to the Salzburg church music customs under Archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo: as a festive mass, the mass required the orchestral apparatus of a "Missa solemnis", but in its duration it is more comparable to a "Missa brevis".

Characteristic of the work is the strictly contrapuntal "Benedictus", which forms a strong contrast to the "Agnus Dei": here the organ is used as a soloist and, alternating with the concertante winds, forms a framework for the solo soprano, which is rich in coloratura.
