Description:
On the occasion of the inauguration of a new orphanage on Vienna's Rennweg, the just twelve-year-old Mozart appeared before the audience as composer and conductor with his "Missa solemnis " in c K. 139. This astonishing early work follows the form of a Neapolitan cantata mass, whose individual movements, such as the "Gloria" and "Credo", are in turn made up of self-contained choruses, ariosi and ensembles. Characteristic of the often performed mass is the sharp contrast between a cheerful mood in C major and dramatic, sombre passages in a minor key.
