Description:
Beethoven described the magnificent Missa solemnis as "my greatest work" and sold copies of the manuscript to some of his subscribers even before publication.
This Urtext edition of the work takes all sources into account, including the old and new complete editions. Their context is clearly explained in a stemma. The renowned Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper arrives at different readings in several places, for example in the Sanctus, where the choir enters instead of the soloists and not only in the "Pleni sunt coeli". Also worth mentioning is the inclusion of the soloists in addition to the choir in the majority of the Credo. These facts and numerous editorial decisions are documented in the detailed Critical Report.
An appendix presents for the first time Beethoven's arrangement of the Gregorian hymn "Tantum ergo", which he wrote at the same time as the "Missa solemnis" and which is very probably connected with it.
The edition is aimed at all those who are looking for a combination of reliable text and well-founded editorial notes for a successful interpretation of this outstanding work.
