Textgrundlage des überwiegend lyrisch-expressiven, klangzarten Oratoriums ist die am katholischen Ritus orientierte lateinische Weihnachtsliturgie. Das 1860 komponierte Werk, das mittlerweile auch in Deutschland recht bekannt ist, zeigt gleich zu Beginn seine klassizistischen Züge ('Prélude' dans le style de Séb. Bach'). Das Orchester beschränkt sich auf Streicher, Harfe und Orgel, und die Chorpartien sind weder umfangreich noch schwer. Von den Orchesterinstrumenten wird die obligate Harfe nur in zwei der insgesamt 10 Sätze eingesetzt, jeweils zusammen mit Orgel. Fehlt eine Harfe, so kann deren Partie spieltechnisch von der Orgel mitübernommen werden.
