The original score for Janacek's Our Father, a work originally intended for tenor and mixed choir with harmonium or piano accompaniment, was completed in 1901. Six years later, the composer reworked it into a piece with harp and organ accompaniment. This version, which is presented here, was premiered as a cantata by the Hlahol Singers' Association in Prague on November 18, 1906. The setting of the text was inspired by a cycle of paintings by the contemporary Polish painter Mecina-Krzesz, which inspired Janacek to create his own, socially exaggerated interpretation of the prayer. The influence of the Moravian folk song is evident throughout the melody, the declamation of the words has a pure accent on the penultimate syllable due to the influence of the Lachian dialect. The piece is characterized by an oak polymelody. The dramatic sequence of scenes anticipates the opera Jenufa in its expression. The basis for Bohumir Stedron's edition was the third authorized copy of Our Father, which is in the archives of the Prague Hlahol. In contrast to this copy, dynamic signs, phrasing and rhythm were standardized and supplemented. The score contains a preface, a critical report and the text of the piece in Czech and German. The harp part is published separately under the edition no. H 3712a.
