Description:
Er war ohne Widerrede unser größter Kirchenkomponist, so schrieb der Lexikograph E. L. Gerber wenige Jahre nach Homilius’ Tod 1785. Als langjähriger Kreuzkantor hatte der Bach-Schüler Homilius aufgrund der Zerstörung der Kreuzkirche seine Hauptwirkungsstätte an der Dresdner Frauenkirche. Die "Passionskantate" war im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert sehr beliebt und weit verbreitet: Ihre Bekanntheit verdankte sie auch dem Umstand, dass sie 1775 bei Breitkopf in voller Partitur gedruckt wurde – eine seltene Ehre, die im 18. Jahrhundert nur noch einer weiteren Passion zuteil geworden war (Grauns "Tod Jesu"). Ihr Text schildert das Passionsgeschehen aus sehr persönlicher Sicht: Der Fokus liegt weniger auf dem Geschehen selbst, als vielmehr auf den Gefühlen des Betrachters. Diese subjektive betroffene Erzählweise spiegelt sich in einem sehr dramatisch geprägten Rezitativstil wider, der einen reizvollen Kontrast zum expressiven Chorstil und den stark melodiegeprägten Arien darstellt.
