Description:
Contemporary critics considered Rheinberger's Stabat Mater op. 16, composed in 1864, to be "one of the most beautiful works in this genre in recent times. Distinguished by its broad structure and noble tonal effect, its rich polyphony is reminiscent of the masterpieces of the old Italian school." In its expressive choral movements, sonorous homophonic passages are combined with strictly polyphonic sections. The song-like solo pieces are intimately expressive. The orchestra, scored without flutes and trumpets, lends the work its characteristic tonal coloration.
