Since its Berlin premiere in 1755, Carl Heinrich Graun's "sensitive" passion cantata "Der Tod Jesu", based on a libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler, was one of the most frequently performed works of this genre for a long time. Until the end of the 19th century, it was still able to hold its own in the repertoire of numerous oratorio societies and singing academies (above all the Berlin Sing-Akademie), often on an equal footing with Bach's oratorio passions, which finally overtook it in the second half of the century. This new source-critical edition (based on the first edition of 1760) is the first commercially available score of the work for a long time, inviting the public to rediscover this epoch-making passion which set the standard for its time.
