Description:
This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final bar of his "Dream of Gerontius". First performed in 1900, the work has long been one of the standard works of great oratorio choruses in Great Britain. Elgar's touching, poetic setting of Cardinal John Henry Newman's poem of the same name is about the death of a man and his journey to God in the afterlife.
The musical image of the soul that flies past the mocking demons to God at the side of its guardian angel, is allowed to see him briefly and looks forward to redemption in purgatory, confident and comforted. The work is a real rarity in the history of oratorio music and an exciting alternative to classical requiem settings for large choirs. It owes its popularity to the suggestive, often sensual power of the music, the large choral scenes of the demons and angels and the three impressive solo parts.
All previous editions were reprints based on the historical, non-uniform first printing materials. Carus counters this with a modern, newly set and critical edition in which the piano reduction and orchestral parts are fully compatible with each other for the first time. It takes all sources into account and evaluates the autograph in detail. The complete orchestral material for the edition is available for purchase; the piano reduction is bilingual, as is the score. The score is also available digitally. - A milestone in late Romantic choral music and a standard work in Great Britain - First modern score with extensive critical report and complete performance material - With bilingual vocal text (English/German)
