Description:
Goethe's dramatic ballad The First Walpurgis Night inspired Mendelssohn to create a magnificent and vivid depiction of the conflict between an old pagan community and the new aspirations of Christianization, between faith and superstition on both sides. Mendelssohn premiered his ballad in 1833, but decided to make extensive revisions before finally having the work printed in 1844. The Carus edition by the well-known Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd is based on the first printing of the score and thus the last authentic version of the work. This important choral work by Mendelssohn is now available in a modern Urtext edition, with score (bilingual), piano reduction, choral score and purchasable orchestral material as well as a CD recording by the Kammerchor Stuttgart under the direction of Frieder Bernius (planned for fall 2019).
