Description:
In the second year of the Junior Band, orchestra rehearsals begin as early as the first week of classes, meaning there are approximately 30 orchestra rehearsals throughout the school year. Once again, the rehearsal material is divided into 20 sections, supplemented by a short chapter on well-known Advent and Christmas carols. As in the first volume, there is plenty of room here for repetition and students’ own ideas. The goals for the second year of Junior Band include exploring various musical styles (chorale, march, multi-movement works, swing, samba, waltz, body percussion), two concerts/recitals, and a competition toward the end of the wind ensemble program. Emphasis is placed on achieving a balanced sound as well as on developing a solid sense of rhythm. Numerous listening exercises promote intonation and attentiveness. With "African Dreams," the orchestra members have the opportunity to rehearse the piece independently in small groups—whatever the outcome, it’s sure to be exciting! The booklets are available for all woodwind and brass instruments, as well as for percussion and mallets, and are supplemented by an accompaniment tape. They are individually tailored to each instrument in terms of length, difficulty level, and part writing. A score for music educators, featuring rehearsal tips and page references to the student booklets, rounds out the concept.
