Description:
Das Liebesverbot' is an early opera by Richard Wagner, composed in 1834 - 1836 when he was in his early twenties. Subtitled 'Die Novize von Palermo' ('The Novice of Palermo'), the work stands apart from Wagner's later, more famous music dramas. Instead of mythic themes and sweeping leitmotifs, it offers a lively, Mediterranean comedy inspired by William Shakespeare's play 'Measure for Measure'.
The music is bright, rhythmic, and ensemble-driven, with energetic choruses and dance-like passages that evoke the sunlit setting of Palermo.
At the end of the 2nd act Wagner composed a 'Marcia' (March) which is now transcribed for Symphonic Band by Dutch arranger Gerard Posch.
