Description:
The Marian motet "Alma Dei creatoris" K. 277 (272a) shows a close stylistic relationship to the motet "Sancta Maria, mater Dei" K. 273. Both motets are in the same key, borrow their three-part form from the sonata form and prefer a homophonic progression of the voices, to which the orchestra is subordinate. The autograph of the motet "Alma Dei creatoris" is missing, and the copy with handwritten entries by Wolfgang in the Salzburg Cathedral Archives, which replaces it as the primary source, does not contain a date. The inner relationship not only to K. 273, but also to the Mass K. 275 (272b) allows the conclusion that the work was composed around the same time, namely in the fall of 1777.
