Description:
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) lived almost 40 years apart, but in terms of music philosophy they were at home in the same world. For Bach, as for Leibniz, the secret world of numbers behind the sounding world of music was also a path to knowledge in theology. The "musico theologia", formulated by Lorenz Christoph Mizler and inspired by Leibniz, finally linked music with "theologia naturalis". And a few decades later, the idea of understanding music as an independent source of divine revelation led the way to the "religion of art" of Romanticism. The flute part in all three songs is inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's "Musical Offering", in particular canons 9 and 10, which Bach entitled "Quaerendo invenietis". (Dorothea Hofmann)
