  • Genre: Classical Music, Classical Music of the Modern Age
In the autumn of 1998, I asked Richard to write a flute quintet which would be suitable for a concert featuring the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major.
Since the Brandenburg would be the last work on a rather long program, it seemed like a good idea to give the flutist something else to do. I suggested a theme and variations on the Minuet in g major that is a staple of young students' Bach Albums.
As usual, Richard was immediately interested and sympathetic and did, indeed, write a charming, clever, and humorous work which is accessible to players and audiences alike.
In deciding on the title, we agreed that since the whole program was an homage to Bach, we were justified in poking a little fun at ourselves for taking liberties with even a minor work of the great composer (so 'Dommage à Bach' / damage to Bach).
In reading the score I found many humorous references to other 'popular' works of Bach, i.e., a hint of 'Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring' and 'Air for the G String' which quickly evolve into variations on the original minuet, Richard Lane's skill is also evident in the counterpoint that is reminiscent of the Two-Part Inventions and the use of subtle romantic interludes.
