Johann Gottlieb Goldberg had to play Bach's "Goldberg Variations" night after night to his employer Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk, so that he could "be cheered up a little in his sleepless nights". It's just an anecdote and almost certainly not true. But if it had been true, what did it do to Goldberg? "Goldberg's Nightmares" "paint over" three of the variations: Variants 19, 25 and 28 inspire three scenes that always let Bach's original shine through, but now tell their own stories.
